Imagine yourself trapped in a minimally furnished room with two imperfect strangers and finding out that whatever utterance your mind forms succumbs to the pressure of those staring at you. No intimate thought, none of your deepest feelings can escape the scrutiny of your roommates, cellmates, hellmates. It’s the boiling point of peer pressure: “L’enfer, c’est les autres” or “Hell is others.” Huis-Clos / No Exit is the most celebrated and studied existentialist play. French philosopher, playwright, novelist, and essayist, Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980) has cast in a sharp light his stark views about the relation of the self to others, making his philosophy of humanity accessible to a large audience. |
