LE THEATRE DE LA CHANDELLE VERTE

Directed by Henrik Borgstrom
performed by Francine Conley

Over a background of images and quotes, “Lettres de femmes, Femmes de lettres” reveals the humanity of women’s voices over the centuries. Through a visual trip through space and time, visiting the far away reaches of the French-speaking world, as well as its distant centuries, leading up to today’s complex reality, the audience will relate to the emotions and dilemmas of famous female writers expressing their views as mothers, lovers, sisters, and daughters. Such authors include Marie de France, a poet who settled in England in the shadow of William the Conqueror; Madame de Lafayette, who wrote the very first modern novel; Colette, a provocative writer who broke taboos in early 20th-century France; and Marguerite Duras, whose sensual experience of life in Vietnam marked generations of French teen readers.

All of these women and their selected texts share an “imagery pertinent to the natural elements of water, wind and fire as well as themes of letters, paper, voyage, exile, and […] the need to write oneself out of exile and silence.”
